FOOD + PHYSICS = HARVARD

In what was is undoubtedly a huge shock to the food world, Ferran Adria has announced that he will close his restaurant El Bulli to teach Culinary Physics at Harvard. He admits that he made this decision because El Bulli was losing a lot of money. The restaurant's schedule was - close half the year for research & development, serve dinner the other half of the year. A dreamy, but money-draining business model. It's unclear though as to what his ultimate plan is. Some say that after his 13 weeks at Harvard, he will re-open El Bulli as a restaurant in 2014. Others are saying that he will form a foundation (giving culinary scholarships to avante-garde chefs). Either way, he's taking a step in the right direction. Ferran is a pioneer in the food world. He is almost obligated to pass on his mad culinary scientific methods/inventions to the next generation of aspiring chefs. Respect must be given to the man who for the most part invented and popularized molecular gastronomy. Ferran Adria, teach them well.

THE BLACK KEYS "BUSTED"
Available May 18, 2010
If you don't know about Frank Turner, you should.
He's a Folk/Punk musician from England who tours endlessly worldwide and plays by far the best sing-along pub music I've heard in a long time. His newest album "Poetry of the Deed" is a mix of hard-strumming folk rock and soft spoken English ballads. Check out the video for his song "The Road".

Just updated the blog list. Check 'em out.

CMW Update:

Wednesday - Caught a few acoustic acts @ Global village, then a rock band @ The Rivoli

Thursday - Saw Magneta Lane @ The Horseshoe (the singer has a great voice), then headed over to Opera House to see Woodhands (a strange synth/electronic/drums band).

Tonight - Who knows. Maybe spend the night at Silver Dollar/Comfort Zone. Looks like there are a few good bands playing there.

So 2010 is upon us folks. If you're experiencing those post-holiday blues, don't worry. There's a lot to look forward to this year.

Live music from English folk/punk-rocker Frank Turner at the end of the month. Some of you may know about the free Horseshoe show on Jan. 26, but even fewer may know about his Dakota show on the 27th.

Gordon Lightfoot & Gord Downie @ Toronto Centre for the Arts on Feb. 4

Jay Malinowski (of Bedouin Soundclash) is doing a solo show @ The Rivoli on March 6

Then, just when the winter is about to blow over, the city is getting hit with a storm of music. Canadian Music Week is taking place between the 10th and 14th of March. With each passing year, CMW brings more Canadian and International artists to the stage. Every year the bands get better, every year there are a few surprises, and for one week the streets are packed with venue hopping music lovers. Now that's what I call arts tourism. So far, there are some pretty sweet bands slated for the 2010 festival: OLP, Joel Plaskett, Bedouin Soundclash, and obviously a whole lot more as we near the festival.

I know that's a lot of music/event news to digest, so I'll be back later with more news/updates.

Since the cold weather has already hit us and will continue to pummel our immune systems, we should be thankful that the holiday season is upon us. For those of us who celebrate Chanukah, I realize this post is a bit late - Happy Chanukah nonetheless. For those of you who celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas in a couple of days. For everyone who likes to get a little tipsy (responsibly of course) and party, Happy New Year.

There's a lot to look forward to in the New Year. A bunch of good concerts coming our way in early 2009, Canadian Music Week in March, and the prospect of better weather nearing the end of the fist quarter.

So... Happy Holidays to everyone. Stay warm, enjoy yourselves and all the best for 2010.
